There has long been a fascination about the human anatomy. Even the great renaissance master Michelangelo secretly cut corpses up in the middle of the night to view and document, in order to have a better understanding of how to represent the body as a visual form.Personally, my whole idea of creating “sculptures” out of various animal organs and flesh comes from the need to create something with my bare hands. As an artist, depending solely on our natural light and environment to capture images is simply too limiting for artistic expression. The idea of displaying meat comes from our immediate dependence on nature and animals. Because of our dominion over the creatures of this world, we have exploited them to serve our daily needs. In order to portray a sense of eminence, I have placed the subjects behind a texture painted canvas backdrop to be photographed in a straight manner. With a direct approach to photography, it is the subject matter that takes precedence. Also, by suspending the “meat sculptures” in mid air, an aura of “spirituality” is portrayed because of a lack of realism. To be precise, my work is to make people stop and think for a moment about our existence. By displaying the “anatomy of meat” that we consume, we must come to realize that our existence is not merely about survival and existence, but that we do have a higher purpose in life; and that is the duty that each and everyone of us must explore and come to realize. |
